Festival Jessup’s Falls is looking for Volunteers

I’m sure you’re wondering what has been going on with our work to save the Jessup’s Falls escarpment.  Although our County mayors voted to keep the aggregate resource designation (and therefore quarrying) off the escarpment, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) reversed the change to the Official Plan. Our position hasn’t changed, as the reality of the remarquable but fragile karst landscape of the escarpment has not changed, and as the real threats of heavy industry to the river, to our wells, and to our community as a whole have not changed. So our township and more than a dozen private citizens have appealed the MMAH decision.

We have hearings coming up as well as other meetings to defend our position.

A few residents are representing themselves at the hearings, while some of us have teamed up to be represented by lawyers. Our next pre-hearing conference with the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) is April 27, 2017. The full hearing is scheduled for October 2nd, 2017.

We need funds to help pay for lawyer and expert fees and for the studies needed to support our case. We’re planning activities throughout the year to help pay for the expense of protecting our natural heritage, our air, and our water.

Our first activity is celebrating the history of Jessup’s Falls and looking forward to the sustainable growth of the future.dsc_0167

There will be:

  • Displays on the history of the region, a barbecue and we are hoping some entertainment!
  • Tables to showcase the talents and businesses from the region.
  • A silent auction of local products, arts and crafts, gift certificates – anything anyone wants to donate for sale is welcome.

Local businesses that would like to showcase their products are welcome to set up a table but proceeds of any sales on the day would go to the EscarpAction Jessup’s Falls defence fund.

The benefit of taking part in the silent auction is free promotion! We will be displaying the goods for auction online in advance on the Jessup’s Falls site: www.jessupsfalls.ca, with links to the business or artist donating. Our focus is to celebrate our beautiful region and showcase the best it has to offer.

Help us by

  • Setting up a table to showcase your products and donate a basket of products for auction
  • Donating a piece of art or something you have made for the auction
  • Donating gift certificates to local businesses
  • Volunteering

We need volunteers!

We are looking for all kinds of volunteers for events and day-to-day activities. Would you like to help with promotion? Door-to-door delivery of flyers? Or help on the day: watching displays, serving snacks, etc.
